The Territory...

The red-shouldered hawk is a medium-sized hawk. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California.

Throughout the past few months of "Stay at Home" social distancing i've had the pleasure of observing the red shouldered hawk that nests in the small woodline behind our quiet neighborhood here in West-Central Georgia. If you've ever had the opportunity to sit back and watch a bird of prey move its quite the experience. I would estimate that it's been around for approximately 4 to 5 years based on my earliest recollection of its presence. Until the start of distancing, I'd never had a chance to just sit back and watch it move. It patrols the grid methodically, displaying a dominating presence. It soars overhead scanning the grid square at times and roosting in positions of territorial overwatch surveying the ground's surface at other times. It's loud intimidating screeches can be heard echoing throughout the treeline when out of sight. It shows little to no fear of human presence as demonstrated by the close proximity of the photos, but intelligent enough to know that humans are unpredictable and are not to be completely trusted...(especially in 2020)! It maintains a safe standoff distance. A welcomed fixture within the neighborhood and I think all residents will agree that we maintain a refreshing & healthy co-existence. The red-shouldered hawk.
